FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
There are no stupid questions if you really want to learn
WHAT IS KRAV MAGA?
Krav Mag is a self-defense system invented in the 1930s by Imi Lichtenfeld. It is not a martial art and focuses instead on getting away as quickly as possible from danger. (See the longer explanation here)
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MYTH ABOUT KRAV MAGA?
It is not about being violent. My hope is that my students never need to have to use the skills they learn in order to defend themselves. However, if they do fall into a dangerous situation, I want them to have the skills they need to disengage and get away to safety.
WHERE DO YOU WORK?
I work at Krav Maga Experts. You can find me at their Union Square or Upper West Side Location, depending on schedule.
WHY DO YOU LOVE KRAV MAGA SO MUCH?
I aspire to live an efficient lifestyle. Krav Maga isn't about being fancy, but solving the problem as quickly and best as possible. In street fights, there are no referees and the match-up is not going to be fair. Krav Maga empowers people to defend themselves as quickly as possible.
IS KRAV MAGA SUITED FOR PEOPLE WHO AREN'T ATHLETIC?
Definitely. Krav Maga is based on natural instincts, so you already have it wired into you. My job is to teach you how to modify those instincts to make you ready to take on a challenge. Every person who is willing to work hard is welcome on the mat. I have students with disabilities and they are able to learn the movements because they are committed.
WHAT IF YOU ARE OUT OF SHAPE? CAN YOU STILL DO KRAV MAGA?
If the problem is being out of shape, Krav Maga is a great way to get into shape. Students not only get a lot of exercises, but develop better habits in their daily life. Many clean up their eating and commit to a healthier life.
HOW DO YOU SAY YOUR NAME?
(video) Just do your best!
WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER PASSIONS?
I love learning new ways to better myself. I am a Brazilian Ju-Jitsu practitioner, and I'm training to become a yoga instructor.
My favorite ways to unwind:
Spending time with friends.
IS STUDYING KRAV MAGA DANGEROUS?
Not with a trained instructor. Safety is a top priority and injuries are very rare. However, I will be honest, you might be a bit sore the first few weeks and have a few interesting bruises. However, as long as you follow directions, you will be fine.
IS KRAV MAGA SUITABLE FOR KIDS?
Definitely. One of the biggest problems today is kids do not spend time exercising and playing, but just stare at screens. Kids who don't work out suffer from an unhealthy diet and bad muscle tone. They also have poor social skills, and lack of discipline. Krav Maga teaches kids discipline, teamwork, responsibility, and promotes living a healthier life through movement.
WHAT IS YOUR VIEW ON THE ISRAELI PALESTINIAN CONFLICT?
I don't discuss politics online because it's a waste of time. People just yell at each other and no one learns anything.
My views are simple. "So That One May Walk In Peace."
I'm a former combat soldier, I know how terrible violence is, I saw it with my own eyes. I've lost loved ones to war, and I know that everyone suffers when violence is used to settle conflicts.
I live my life to empower others in a way that will hopefully avoid combat. It's why I believe in peace, dialogue, cooperation, and de-escalation, empowering others to live the best life possible.
Here is my statement of principles, as created by Grandmaster Imi.
To educate and build people mentally, spiritually and physically, so that in a time of need one will be able to defend and attack with maximum speed and efficiency.
To establish in one a sense of self-worth
To work towards the bringing together of hearts and ending violence around the world between all peoples, irrespective of color, race or religion.
I think that should cover my views on any conflict. Find a just and peaceful way to resolve it.
Instead of arguing online, I suggest you donate to Women Wage Peace, a feminist grassroots movement of Israelis and Palestinians advocating dialogue and a prosperous future without conflict. That would actually benefit the people there and is a much more productive use of time.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOD?
Cookies! I know it feels like fitness instructors eat nothing but kale, but I love sweets! I have the same struggles as my students, I know how hard it is for them to make the right choices. That's why I work hard to discipline myself to eat properly. I try to lead by example and use body-ful eating. My mind wants sugar, but my body wants good nutrition. I want to be strong in the mind to follow what my body needs.
